(a) little နဲ႔ (a) few ဟာ အေတာ္မွားတတ္၊ ေရာေထြးတတ္တဲ့ စကားလုံးေတြပါ။ ဒါေတြကို ေသခ်ာေလ့လာၾကည့္ထားမယ္ဆိုရင္ အက်ိဳးရွိပါတယ္။

(a) little ကို ေရတြက္လုိ႔မရတဲ့နာမ္ (uncountable noun) နဲ႔ သုံးရပါတယ္။

Ø  (a) little + uncountable noun

တခ်ိဳ႕နာမ္ေတြက အဂၤလိပ္စာမွာ ေရတြက္လို႔ မရဘူးေနာ္။ ေရတို႔၊ ေလတို႔၊ ဆန္တို႔ စတဲ့စကားလုံးေတြ အားလုံးက ေရတြက္လို႔ မရတဲ့ နာမ္ေတြခ်ည္းပါပဲ။ ဒါေတြကို a little နဲ႔ သုံးရပါတယ္။

ဥပမာေတြကို ၾကည့္ပါ။

§  (a) little water (ေရနည္းနည္း)

§  (a) little time (အခ်ိန္နည္းနည္း)

§  (a) little money (ပိုက္ဆံနည္းနည္း)

§  (a) little soup (စြတ္ျပဳတ္နည္းနည္း)

(a) few ကုိ အမ်ားကိန္းနာမ္ေတြနဲ႔ သုံးရပါတယ္။

Ø  (a) few + plural noun

§  (a) few books (စာအုပ္နည္းနည္း)

§  (a) few questions (ေမးခြန္းနည္းနည္း)

§  (a) few people (လူနည္းနည္း)

§  (a) few days (ရက္နည္းနည္း)

(a) little / (a) few စသည္ျဖင့္ ကြင္းစကြင္းပိတ္ေလးေတြနဲ႔ ထည့္ထားတာ သတိထားမိမယ္ေနာ္။ ဘာလုိ႔ ဒီလိုေရးထားတာလဲဆိုေတာ့ a little နဲ႔ little , a few နဲ႔ few မတူပါဘူး။ ကြ်န္ေတာ္တို႔ တစ္ခုခ်င္း ၾကည့္ၾကတာေပါ့။

Ø  a little = some but not much

a little ဆိုရင္ တခ်ိဳ႕တေလေတာ့ ရွိတယ္။ သိပ္မမ်ားဘူး။ နည္းနည္းဆိုတဲ့ သေဘာေပါ့။ ဥပမာေလးေတြနဲ႔ တြဲၾကည့္ပါ။

§  She didn’t eat anything, but she drank a little water.

သူက ဘာမွမစားဘူး။ ဒါေပမဲ့ ေရနည္းနည္းေတာ့ ေသာက္ခဲ့တယ္။

§  I speak a little Spanish.

ကြ်န္ေတာ္ စပိန္လိုနည္းနည္း ေျပာတတ္တယ္။

§  A: Can you speak Spanish?

ခင္ဗ်ား စပိန္လိုေျပာတတ္လား။

§  B: A little.

နည္းနည္းပါ။

Ø  a few = some but not many

a few လည္း တခ်ိဳ႕တေလရွိတယ္၊ သိပ္မမ်ားဘူးဆိုတဲ့ သေဘာပါပဲ။ a little နဲ႔ a few အဓိပၸာယ္တူေပမဲ့ ကြာတာတစ္ခ်က္က a little က ေရတြက္လို႔ မရတဲ့ နာမ္ေတြနဲ႔ သုံးျပီး a few ကို ေရတြက္လို႔ ရတဲ့ နာမ္ေတြနဲ႔ တြဲသုံးတာေနာ္။

ဥပမာေတြ ၾကည့္ရေအာင္။

§  Excuse me, I have to make a few phone calls.

တဆိတ္ေလာက္ခင္ဗ်ာ..ကြ်န္ေတာ္ ဖုန္းေလးနည္းနည္း ေခၚရမွာမို႔ပါ။

§  We’re going away for a few days.

ကြ်န္ေတာ္တို႔ ရက္နည္းနည္းေလာက္ တျခားသြားမယ္။

§  I speak a few words of Spanish.

ကြ်န္ေတာ္ စပိန္စာလုံးနည္းနည္း ေျပာတတ္တယ္။

§  A: Are there any shops near here?

ဒီနားမွာ ဆိုင္ေတြ ရွိလား။

§  B: Yes, a few.

ဟုတ္ကဲ့ နည္းနည္း ရွိပါတယ္။

ခုေလာက္ထိ နားလည္ျပီဆိုရင္ တဆင့္တက္မယ္ေနာ္။  a little တို႔  a few တို႔က အနည္းငယ္ဆိုတဲ့ အဓိပၸာယ္ရွိတာေတာ့ ဟုတ္ပါျပီ။ ဒီစကားလုံးေတြမွာ a ျဖဳတ္ျပီး little တို႔ few တို႔ ဆိုရင္ေကာ ဘယ္လို ျဖစ္သြားႏိုင္မလဲ။ ကြ်န္ေတာ္တို႔ ၾကည့္ၾကရေအာင္။

Ø  little (without a) = nearly no or nearly nothing

little ကို ျမန္မာလိုဆိုရင္ မရွိသေလာက္လို႔ ဘာသာျပန္ေျပာႏိုင္ပါတယ္။ a little နဲ႔ နည္းနည္း အဓိပၸာယ္ကြာသြားတယ္ေနာ္။ ဒါကို သတိထားပါ။

ဥပမာေလးေတြနဲ႔ ၾကည့္ရင္ ရွင္းသြားပါလိမ့္မယ္။

§  There was little food in the fridge. It was nearly empty.

ေရခဲေသတၱာထဲမွာ အစားအေသာက္ မရွိသေလာက္ပဲ။ အဲဒါက အလြတ္နီးပါး ျဖစ္ေနျပီ။

Very little လို႔လည္း ေျပာႏိုင္ပါတယ္။ ပိုေလးနက္တာေပါ့။

§  Dan is very thin because he eats very little. (=nearly nothing)

ဒန္က အရမ္းပိန္တယ္။ ဘာလို႔လဲဆိုေတာ့ သူက ဘာမွမစားသေလာက္ပဲ။

Ø  few (without a)= nearly no

few လည္းပဲ မရွိသေလာက္လို႔ အဓိပၸာယ္ရတယ္ေနာ္။ ဥပမာေတြနဲ႔ တြဲၾကည့္ၾကမယ္။

§  There were few people in the theatre. It was nearly empty.

ျပဇာတ္ရံုထဲမွာ လူမရွိသေလာက္ပဲ။ အဲဒါက ဗလာနီးပါး ျဖစ္ေနတယ္။

Very few လို႔လည္း ေျပာႏိုင္ပါေသးတယ္။

§  Your English is very good. You make few mistakes.

မင္းရဲ႕ အဂၤလိပ္စာက သိပ္ေကာင္းတယ္။ မင္းအမွားမလုပ္သေလာက္ပဲ။

တစ္ခုခ်င္းစီကို ရွင္းျပျပီးျပီဆိုေတာ့ ဒီတစ္ခါ ႏိႈင္းယွဥ္ၾကည့္ရေအာင္။

little နဲ႔ a little ကို အရင္ ႏိႈင္းယွဥ္ၾကမယ္။

§  They have a little money, so they’re not poor. (= they have some money)

သူတို႔မွာ ပိုက္ဆံနည္းနည္းရွိတယ္။ ဒါေၾကာင့္ သူတို႔က မဆင္းရဲဘူး။

§  They have little money. They are very poor. (=nearly no money)

သူတို႔မွာ ပိုက္ဆံမရွိသေလာက္ပဲ။ သူတို႔ သိပ္ဆင္းရဲတယ္။

few နဲ႔ a few ကိုလည္း ႏိႈင္းယွဥ္ၾကည့္ပါဦးမယ္။

§  I have a few friends, so I’m not lonely. (= I have some friends)

ကြ်န္ေတာ့္မွာ မိတ္ေဆြနည္းနည္းရွိတယ္။ ဒါေၾကာင့္ ကြ်န္ေတာ္ အထီးမက်န္ဘူး။

§  I’m sad and I’m lonely. I have few friends. (= nearly no friends)

ကြ်န္မက ဝမ္းနည္းျပီး အထီးက်န္တယ္။ ကြ်န္မမွာ မိတ္ေဆြ မရွိသေလာက္ပဲ။

ဒီေလာက္ဆိုရင္ (a) little, (a) few တို႔ အေၾကာင္း နားလည္ေလာက္ျပီထင္ပါတယ္။ အဂၤလိပ္စာ အသုံးခ်ျပီး ဘဝတိုးတက္ေအာင္ျမင္ၾကပါေစ။
